The Springfield Isolation Hospital in Springfield, MA was built in 1930 and was one of the largest Art Deco buildings in Springfield at the time, replacing the former alms house located on its land which was demolished soon before the hospital was built. The hospital was built and opened with the intention of serving to treat people with contagious diseases with the primary focus being tuberculosis. The building was built with many large windows, which correlates to the best known cures of tuberculosis being sunlight, and air exposure. By the 1950’s, the need for care of tuberculosis had begun to fade, and this led the Springfield Isolation Hospital to shift to more general use with the name of The Municipal Hospital, and a newer, larger building had been built in the early 1950’s which connected to the older 1930’s building. The hospital saw much success with many treatments available to serve the public, however, the City of Springfield sold the hospital In 1996 to Olympus Healthcare Group for $3.5 million. This sale took place due to the hospital’s outdated nature, high costs for renovation, and high costs for potential demolition and fresh construction. Vibra healthcare later took over, and the 1950’s building continued to operate as a privately-run hospital with the original 1930’s building being vacant/ disused. After years of operation, the Vibra General Hospital began to see a major decline, and the hospital scaled back in staff and practices in 2018 after propositions to close had been made since 2017. By 2023, much of the 1950’s building was vacant, along with the fully shuttered original 1930’s building. The remaining 87 staff of Vibra were let off ahead of the full shutdown that took place in June 2023. It didn’t take long for homeless to seek shelter in the now vacant hospital, and it didn’t take long for explorers, photographers, ghost hunters, vandals, thiefs, and arsonists to find their way into the historic hospital, and quickly, the property became a massive nuisance to the city of Springfield. In October 2023, the property was sold back to the city for only $1, and boards were placed on all the doors and windows to keep trespassers out. Today, the former Springfield Isolation Hospital and Municipal Hospital remain abandoned, and decaying with future plans unclear. However, there is a high chance of demolition of the historic site.
